The conflict, originally between Wilton and Chatham, led Arkle to intervene. Arkle's intervention and Wilton's reaction to it led them to a fight. Arkle explained that Chatham was her friend and she was trying to protect her. All three used physical force and ownership of the conflict shifted from Wilton and Chatham to Wilton and Arkle.

Third parties also became directly involved without intervening physically:

Dawlish complained about loud music late at night. In the end, she threatened to complain to the officers if the other prisoners did not turn their music down. A few prisoners were upset that Dawlish had made the threat and she, in turn, was threatened with violence. The following morning, Dawlish asked who had been calling her names. Other prisoners identified a prisoner who denied any role. Trimdon heard the conversation, rushed to Dawlish and assaulted her. The dispute was not solely between Trimdon and Dawlish. Others wanted the music turned down; others were angry at Dawlish for her threat to inform on them. But only Dawlish and Trimdon actually exchanged blows.

Trimdon justified her behaviour by appeal to the judgement of other prisoners on the wing:

‘She pissed a lot of girls off cos of her attitude.’

Dawlish confirmed that her problems were not with Trimdon alone:

‘They were going against me. I would ask them for a light and they would say, “Fuck you”.’
